Sze-Shun joined the Empirical Education team as a Research Assistant in 2018 after her background in schools and community-based work ignited a curiosity for what goes behind the decisions schools and districts make. Sze-Shun’s perspective has been shaped by her experiences furthering social emotional learning and positive school climate in San Francisco public schools, conducting community-based participatory research on the housing crisis as an undergraduate in UC Santa Cruz’s sociology department, and working and learning from labor organizations in the Bay Area. Since 2019, Sze-Shun’s role at Empirical Education has been focused on our evaluation of the CREATE teacher residency program’s work in Atlanta Public Schools. CREATE’s emphasis on supporting the development of critical-consciousness and self-compassion in educators aligns with Sze-Shun’s interest in working towards equity in education.
